The link between recovery speed and agent performance is straightforward once you know where to look: agents who return to baseline quickly after a hard interaction hold their numbers steady for the rest of the shift. Agents who don’t carry the previous call’s dysregulation into the next one.

The Performance Signal Most QA Programs Miss

Traditional QA scoring evaluates each call in isolation. But recovery speed and agent performance interact across calls, not within them — a call scored well can still be sitting on top of unresolved dysregulation from twenty minutes earlier, and that debt eventually surfaces.

It usually shows up as a pattern rather than a single bad call: handle time creeping up across a shift, tone flattening, a small spike in hold requests, or a sudden defensive reaction to a routine objection.

Why Two Agents With the Same Skill Set Perform Differently

This is the piece that script-based and skills-based training can’t explain on its own. Two agents with identical product knowledge and identical scripts can post very different numbers over a shift, purely because one recovers from stress events faster than the other.

What Faster Recovery Speed Changes

When recovery speed improves — even modestly — the effect compounds across a shift. Fewer calls start from a dysregulated baseline, which means fewer calls run long, fewer calls escalate unnecessarily, and QA scores stabilize rather than trending downward as a shift wears on.

A cross-sectional study of over 16,000 Finnish employees using heart rate variability data found measurable, individual differences in stress and recovery during workdays, reinforcing that recovery capacity is a real, variable, trackable trait — not a fixed personality feature.
