Fast Recovery vs. Slow Recovery: What Separates High Performers

What Fast Recovery Looks Like

An agent with fast recovery takes a difficult call, shows a brief and normal dip — maybe a slightly longer wrap-up — and is back to their standard pace within a call or two. The event doesn’t disappear, it just resolves quickly instead of lingering.

What Slow Recovery Looks Like

An agent with slow recovery carries the difficult call forward. It shows up as shorter patience on the next few interactions, a defensive tone that wasn’t there an hour ago, or a QA dip that seems to come from nowhere but is actually delayed fallout from something earlier in the shift.

Over a full shift, slow recovery compounds. By hour six, an agent who started strong can be running on a completely different baseline than they were at hour one — and it will read as inconsistency, not as a recovery speed problem, unless someone is looking for the pattern.

Why This Isn’t About Effort or Attitude

It’s tempting to read slow recovery as a motivation or attitude issue. Usually it isn’t. It’s a regulation pattern, and it responds to conditioning the same way fast recovery does — it’s simply moving in the other direction. This is explored in more depth on the Performance Variability hub.
